In 1947 Ernesto felt moved to study med school after his grandmother fell terminally ill. He quit studying as an engineer and went on to med school. He enrolled in the School of Medicine at the University of Buenes Aires. Before finishing med school he traveled on a ship working as a nurse for the people on board.While still in med school in 1950 he traveled throughout several countries in South America with his friend, Alberto Granado. As a med student he and Alberto visited and worked with multiple leper colonies. Alberto decided to stay behind in Venezuela to work as a doctor. in 1951 Ernesto went back to Argentina to finish med school. He graduated in June of 1953. Although he had chances for jobs as a doctor, he diced to leave for La Paz, Bolivia.
